The Best Hikes Near Sunken Lake and the Annapolis Valley
One of the reasons guests keep coming back to Sunken Escapes is how much hiking sits within thirty minutes of the cabin. From easy waterside walks to one of the most dramatic coastal trails in Canada, here are the hikes we send people on.
Easy: Gaspereau River Trail Twenty minutes from the cabin, the Gaspereau River Trail is a flat, shaded out-and-back beside the river. Good for families, dog-friendly, beautiful in autumn.
Easy-moderate: Blomidon Provincial Park Red sandstone cliffs over the Minas Basin. The Jodrey Trail loop is about 6 km with constant views. Pair it with a stop at The Lookoff on the drive in.
Moderate: Cape Blomidon's Beach Walk Time it with low tide. Walk the red-sand beach beneath the cliffs and watch the Bay of Fundy retreat almost to the horizon. Roughly 4 km return depending on tide.
Challenging: Cape Split The signature Annapolis Valley hike. 16 km return through old-growth forest, ending on a grassy headland 100 metres above the Bay of Fundy. The roar of the tides funnelling through the gap is unforgettable. Allow 5–6 hours and bring water.
Bonus: Kentville Ravine Trail A short, quiet old-growth hemlock forest walk right in Kentville. Ten minutes from the cabin, perfect for a slow morning before checkout.
Back at Sunken Escapes, the barrel sauna and the lake are the best post-hike recovery in Nova Scotia.
